This is the final part of a fascinating series by Geoff Miller: In 1998, for my Master’s Thesis at San Diego State University, I chose to study the “Decision-Making Factors Governing High School Players’ Choice of a College or Professional Baseball Opportunity.” I wanted to know what factors were most important to high school seniors who were drafted and had to choose between signing or going to school as I had known many players who regretted their choices years after they made them.
Geoff,

Great comments! As I listened to the account on the radio this week, I thought back to watching Bradley play minor league ball. We actually still have some autographed baseballs here in the house from those days (because of the name). I agree he's taken the right step, as have the Mariners, in seeking help. What remains to be seen is how he uses the help. He's gotten help (second chances) more than once before...and squandered the opportunities. Hopefully, this level and type of help will address the true problem(s)...not the superficial reactions we see and hear about in the media. He's a true talent who I think has yet to realize his full potential, if it's not already too late.

Geoff, great piece! Breathing is such an important technique, and it's unfortunate that many athletes who feel themselves tense up don't remember this skill. Thanks for the depth you've provided.

Geoff,

I read through the Babe Ruth piece after you posted it...absolutely fascinating. Thanks for sharing!

As a retired Solider, I work for the US Army Recruiting Command. Our Command Psychologist makes extensive use of the TAIS in our Adaptive Leader / 360 Appraisal program. In a manner similar to what you described, the TAIS results are used to help Army leaders tailor their leadership behavior in response to feedback from their Soldiers. This is part of our (larger) Mentor / Coach program aimed at continually improving our recruiting force to better deal with the challenges they face on a daily basis.
